The program provides the educational resources need to develop proficiency in the diagnosis and treatment of diseases of the arteries, veins and lymphatics; and it offers clinical educational experiences that promote excellence in multidisciplinary communication and professionalism. The program prepares fellows to become proficient in the correlation of basic biomedical knowledge with clinical aspects of vascular surgery.

Fellows provide consultation services with faculty supervision. They have educational responsibilities for junior residents, medical students and allied health professional staff. Fellows learn about importance contextually relevant care, how to function in a system that provides longitudinal care for patients with vascular diseases.

Procedimientos

Upon completion of the program, fellows should be proficient and knowledgeable in the determination or confirmation of the diagnosis, provision of preoperative care, selection and accomplishment of appropriate operative procedure, direction of postoperative care and accomplishment of sufficient follow-up management of vascular surgical patients under the supervision of the attending(s).

Fellows are trained to achieve the minimal standards established by RRC-Surgery for trainees, including a minimum of 200 major open vascular and endovascular procedures:

• Aneurysm repair
• Cirugia cerebrovascular
• Peripheral vascular obstructive surgery
• Abdominal obstructive surgery
• Upper extremity vascular surgery
• Extra-anatomical vascular operations
• Venous operations
• Endovascular therapeutic and diagnostic
• Various miscellaneous vascular procedures

The Association of Program Directors in Vascular Surgery (APDVS) recommends a minimum of 100 open major cases:

• Abdominal: 30
• Cerebrovascular: 25
• Peripheral: 45
• Complex: 10
• Endovascular graft: 5
• Endovascular diagnostic procedures: 50
• Endovascular therapeutic procedures: 25

Fellows also develop an understanding of the methods and techniques of CT scanning, MRI and MRA and other vascular imaging modalities and become proficient in the assessment of the vascular portion of these diagnostic techniques.
